Our ESG Approach

Operating for nearly fifty years, Mapa Group has grown continuously with its ability to adapt quickly to the ever-changing world as well as meet and exceed global expectations in all industries in which it operates. Mapa Group is determined to fulfill today's increasing global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) requirements and implement best compliance practices in all its business activities. By prioritizing ESG and functioning as a sustainable and socially responsible corporation, Mapa Group aspires to accomplish its vision of building for a bright future.

Our Sustainability Strategy

As Mapa Group, we work to build a sustainable future. We support sustainable living with the projects we realize all over the world.

Considering sustainability as an integral part of our business operations, we have designed our sustainability strategy to be directly and effectively integrated into our business model.

By combining our world-class technical expertise with reliability, we create lasting value for all our stakeholders, by building effective relationships with our customers, employees and the communities we engage with.

Accordingly, we have determined the main focus of our sustainability strategy as “realizing value-oriented project for sustainable living”. We operate with three basic principles that feed this focus:

We create economic value, dynamism and employment

With the projects we construct in the geographies where we operate, we create tangible economic value for that geography, while at the same time employing local people through various business opportunities, and cooperating with local suppliers and subcontractors, thus encouraging economic growth.

We minimize our environmental impact

With the awareness that the world's limited resources are precious, we monitor our environmental impact in all our operations and strive to minimize the use of resources. We strongly demand the adoption of the same attitude by all our stakeholders.

We contribute to social welfare and human life

We aim to improve the welfare and living conditions of society through our projects. With the awareness that the world’s most valuable capital is people, we take important steps towards social sustainability with our projects focused on generating social benefits.

Guided by these basic principles, we prioritize environmental protection, social equity and economic development in our operations, thus we actively contribute to solving critical global challenges for the benefit of humanity and future generations.

Stakeholder Engagement

Sustainability is Possible with Stakeholders

Stakeholders, which include various individuals, groups, and organisations directly or indirectly affected by the company’s activities, play a crucial role in achieving sustainability initiatives. We recognize that stakeholder engagement and interaction are essential to increase our sustainability impact. While setting our sustainability priorities and realising our sustainability investments, we carefully consider the opinions and suggestions of our stakeholders and we shape our focus points in collaboration.

Stakeholder Mapping

As Mapa Group, we categorize our stakeholders as internal and external stakeholders, to better manage our relationships with them. Internally, our stakeholders include our board of directors, shareholders and owners, executives and management, employees and Group companies. Externally, our stakeholders cover our suppliers, subcontractors, professional service providers, customers and clients, local communities (societies in the geographies where we operate), financial institutions and investors, insurance providers, public organizations and regulatory authorities, non-governmental organizations, associations and memberships, media and public relations.

Stakeholder Relations

Open communication with stakeholders is a top priority for us. We take great care to listen to the opinions and suggestions of our stakeholders and to inform them accurately on issues that concern them. Recognizing the effective power of communication, we interact with our stakeholders through various communication channels. As Mapa Group, we regularly come together with our stakeholders in many events and meetings. By understanding the needs and expectations of our stakeholders, we shape our sustainability strategies accordingly. We are determined to developing the sustainability ecosystem in co-operation with our stakeholders. In this context, sustainability ecosystem refers to our process of planning, implementing and monitoring our sustainable business practices in interaction with our stakeholders, taking into account environmental, social and economic factors. With this strategic approach, we aim to achieve our sustainability goals and create environmental and social value.

Environment

We make maximum effort to minimize our environmental impact by following the best international environmental practices in every region where we operate.

Environmental Management

As Mapa Group, one of our most important goals is to ensure environmental sustainability while conducting our operations successfully. In this direction, we carry out important sustainability investments and projects to minimize our environmental impact. Mapa Group has ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, which is the gold standard demonstrating commitment to environmental responsibility. We fulfil all our operations within the framework of the quality standards of this certification. We also declared our Environmental and Social Compliance Policy in order to raise the environmental awareness of all our stakeholders and to ensure that they adopt and implement this policy.

Combating Climate Change

We actively combat climate change by addressing the environmental impacts of our construction activities. Construction operations often result in greater energy consumption and a higher carbon footprint. To address these challenges, our company implements a range of sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency measures, use of renewable energy, and reduction of carbon emissions. From project planning to material selection and waste management, we focus on minimizing environmental impacts at every stage of our projects.

Investments Towards Renewable Resources

With the awareness of the vital importance of renewable energy for a sustainable future, as Mapa Group, we take part in the renewable energy sector as an active investor and operator. In particular, we have extensive experience in developing hydroelectric power plant projects. To date, we completed the construction of 10 hydroelectric power plants, with a total capacity of producing nearly 250 megawatts of renewable energy. Apart from providing renewable energy, these hydroelectric power plants also provide critical backup power during significant energy outages as they can generate power to the grid immediately. We will continue to invest in renewable resources and thus contribute to an environmentally sustainable world.

Energy Efficiency and Emissions Management

We aim to use energy efficiently in all geographies where we operate. We organize events and trainings to raise awareness of all our employees on this issue. Adapting the right energy management strategies at every stage of construction processes, we continue our efforts to identify possible energy losses and increase energy efficiency within each operational facility.

Our objective is to actively participate in the global "Net Zero" journey. Accordingly, we regularly calculate our carbon footprint and create action plans to reduce our carbon footprint. Emphasizing the critical importance of this matter, we actively engage with our stakeholders on emissions. In parallel, we closely follow the advancements in the construction industry and we incorporate cutting-edge technologies aimed at minimizing emissions into our operational processes.

Water Management

Efficient use of water and ensuring water security is one of our most critical priorities. As Mapa Group, we consider ourselves a leader within the construction sector in addressing water security and creating efficient water usage mechanisms. Often operating in water-stressed countries to develop state-of-the-art water infrastructure, including tanks and pipelines, we support regions to distribute water more efficiently. To date, Mapa Group built 9 water pipelines with a total length of nearly 3,000 km addressing, acute water issues in regions such as Algeria and Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, in regions where water scarcity is an issue, we facilitate the development of water treatment plants that have been making water potable while also ensuring that there is a sufficient supply of water to meet a community's needs.

Aside from addressing acute water access issues, we actively strive to reduce water consumption and reuse water where possible. We also regularly measure our water footprint and prepare action plans to reduce our water footprint.

Waste Management

We pay great attention to minimising waste generation in all our projects and make maximum effort to use recyclable materials in every possible project. We measure our wastes in hazardous and non-hazardous categories regularly and carry out studies for waste disposal. With the development of new technologies, we aim to contribute to the circular economy by using more sustainable materials in our operations.

Protecting Biodiversity

We attach importance to the protection of biodiversity and natural habitats in all our projects. Before implementing projects, we conduct comprehensive site assessments in consultation with local communities to minimise potentially harmful impacts. In our project planning and implementation, we adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable approaches to ensure that natural habitats are not adversely affected. We prioritise protecting vegetation, working in harmony with local fauna and using sustainable materials. As such, we aim to maintain biodiversity and create a positive impact by contributing to the protection of natural balance and ecosystems.

Social

We conduct our business for “people” with a focus on “people”. Our first priority is to create social value and contribute to human life with all our projects.

We also continue our efforts to increase employment by supporting local youth and adults through vocational training programmes and job opportunities. We promote healthy lifestyles by bringing young people and adults together through sporting activities such as football. In this way, we focus not only on building quality structures but also on improving the well-being and quality of life of the communities in which we operate.

Our suppliers and subcontractors are the core element of our business model and one of our most important stakeholder groups. Good Governance

We believe that Environmental (E) and Social (S) sustainability can only be achieved through a correct and good governance model. This means adopting a business model that prioritises sustainability in decision-making processes, management and throughout the organisation. In this direction, Mapa Group actively strives to support strong corporate governance in all its operations and to integrate sustainability into governance processes.
